The Power of the Pilates Breath

Breathing might seem simple, but in Pilates, it becomes part of the movement itself.

Joseph Pilates placed a strong emphasis on breathing, describing it as an essential part of creating a healthier, more connected body.

Breath Creates Rhythm

In Pilates, breath helps establish the rhythm of an exercise. Inhaling can prepare the body for movement, while exhaling can help create deeper connection and control.

Rather than holding your breath through a challenging exercise, think of your breath as something that keeps the movement flowing.

Breath Helps You Connect

When you pay attention to your breathing, you become more aware of your ribs, abdomen, spine, and posture.

This awareness can change the way an exercise feels.

A movement that once felt difficult or disconnected can begin to feel more intentional simply by slowing down and coordinating your breath with the movement.

Start With One Simple Practice

The next time you step onto your mat or reformer, don't immediately think about the next exercise.

Take a moment.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Allow your shoulders to relax and your body to settle.

Then begin.

Pilates isn't just about how many exercises you can complete. It's about how present you are while doing them.

Breathe first. Move second.
